WOW & Earth Uncovered – Hotel Hilton Berlin “Feel Berlin from the Heart”
It’s no secret Berlin is one of my favourite European cities. A few weeks back I was fortunate to stay at the five star Hilton Berlin Hotel. Right from check-in to check-out I had a great experience. Read on for more.
Hilton Berlin History
Constructed in 1989, the site of the Berlin of the Hilton was originally a five star hotel part of the luxury East German Interhotels chain. Known as the Domhotel (Cathedral Hotel), the hotel was almost exclusively for the use of guests from non-Soviet states. In 1992, following German reunification, the hotel was acquired by the Hilton Group where it became the Hilton Berlin Hotel.
The nearest U-Bahn (metro) station to the Hilton Berlin Hotel is Stadtmitte (which translates as city centre). This pretty much sums up the fantastic location of the hotel. Located on Berlin’s historic Gendarmenmarkt Square, the hotel is just a stones throw from many famous sites. These include the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and Potsdamer Platz. Also in close proximity to the hotel is the brand new Mall of Berlin and Friedrichstraße both of which offer great choices if you want to go shopping. There are great transport links, with the entrance to Stadtmitte station less than 100m from the hotel and a taxi ride to Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main station) around 5-10 minutes away depending on traffic. Overlooking Gendarmenmarkt Square you are guaranteed stunning views from the Hilton Berlin Hotel particularly if you have a window facing room.
The hotel is massive inside, so much so it took me a good two minutes to walk from the lifts to my room. My room was on the main road, overlooking Charlottenstrausse. Despite being adjacent to the street I heard absolutely no noise whatsoever from the road which was great. The room itself was well presented, well lit (somewhat of a rarity in hotels) and well laid out allowing it make the most of the space. Alongside the usual features in a hotel room, there was also a desk and chair. Free WiFi was available in the room provided you are a member of the Hilton HHonours Rewards Program, otherwise its €25 a day. One of the great things about the hotel was they had some universal sockets meaning I didn’t have to worry about adaptors when plugging in my device. Though, one of the downsides of the room was that there weren’t enough sockets in convenient places. The bathroom/toilet area was okay, though could have done with some modernising and I didn’t think the design of the bathroom worked with the decor of the rest of. There were speakers in the bathroom with a feed from the TV to the bathroom allowing you to listen to a TV program as you went about your ablutions. Security is taken seriously at the hotel, with guests required to swipe their keys in the lift to get to their floor.
Alongisde your standard hotel facilities, the hotel has a sauna, fitness centre, solarium, spa & wellness centre and indoor pool. Considering the hotel is located in the heart of Berlin I was amazed at just how large the pool and fitness area was. The hotel also has an ATM machine and great selection of international publications for guests to enjoy, alongside a number of international channels available on the TVs inside rooms.

Being in such close proximity to many restaurants, I didn’t take any food at the Hilton Berlin Hotel other than breakfast and at the lobby bar. Breakfast had a fantastic selection of hot and cold foods with an amazing choice of vegetarian food (somewhat of a rarity in Germany). At €32* for breakfast, as with many other hotels, breakfast doesn’t come cheap. Taking a snack (or in my case Mövenpick ice-cream) at the Lobby Bar, I can’t fault anything. A great atmosphere, free WiFi, comfortable chairs, relaxing music and great service.
Customer service at the Hilton Berlin Hotel seems to be in a league of its own. It’s therefore no wonder the hotel has been shortlisted for two awards at theWorld Travel Awards 2015. Right from check-in to check-out the staff were super friendly and responsive to my needs. I can genuinely fault nothing with the staff at the Hilton Berlin Hotel.
I based my overall review on hotels of a similar category.
Cleanliness – 5/5
Service – 5/5
Facilities – 4.5/5
